Objetivo There is a need for the development of analytical methodology for selective and quantitative determination of chemical parameters of natural sea water (pH, metal ions and organic contaminants at trace level). Metal oxides with ligands covalently bonded to their surface constitute a new class of two-dimensional compounds. Metal oxides, particularly silicas with monolayer of bounded groups, are near to ideal substances for the development of a sensitive matrix for chemical sensors.The project has two objectives: to prepare and study novel chemically-modified materials with metal oxides as a support and organophosphorous complexions or N-containing chelates as bonded ligands; and to test these new materials as sensitive matrixes for electro-chemical and optical sensors development. Further, the project will define the first basic characterization of the different bonded ligand properties, realise new compounds, perform evaluations of materials for possible future sensor configurations and define a specific chemical sensor design using either optics or electrochemical properties for typical applications.
