Development of the design principles for ultra-lightweight large-scale deployable structures for space communications and power

Objetivo

Future long-term space projects will require the development of ultra-lightweight large-scale deployable structures for the generation of energy, use as reflectors and antennae and for tethered systems. These structures, which can be up to several hundred metres in size, can be deployed using flexible rods, cable and thin film elements, but for maximum efficiency will need to have minimum mass, stack efficiently and occupy the minimum volume.

This project will study the application of new materials which can retain their form when stacked and the development of mathematical models and methods for deploying flexible rod, cable and thin film structures. The mathematical simulation of the dynamic processes of deployment and control of orientation for the flexible rod and cable antennae and thin film reflectors will also be carried out.

Recommendations for the design of the above large-scale ultra-lightweight structures will be developed.
