Objetivo The scientific objective of this project is to study the plasma and magnetic field of Mars, the only planet of the solar system for which the magnetic moment is still unknown and for which processes responsible for the formation of the planetary magnetosphere are not yet explained. The role of the hypothetical weak Martian magnetic field has not yet been clarified. This is important for the understanding of the evolution of the interior of the planet and its atmosphere. The aim of this project is to determine the magnitude and spatial extent of the magnetic field internal to Mars; to determine the fraction of the magnetotail magnetic field which is directly induced by the solar wind and by the interplanetary magnetic field; to identify the physical processes leading to the formation of the plasma sheet inside the Martian magnetotail and responsible for the acceleration of planetary ions; to determine the role of the Martian hot oxygen and hydrogen coronas in the process of deceleration of the solar wind; and evaluate the total loss rate of the Martian atmosphere. At the first stage, studies will be based on unique in-situ experimental data obtained during the plasma and magnetic field experiments TAUS, HARP, MAGMA (Phobos-2 mission) carried out jointly by Russian, German and Austrian scientific institutes. The results will be used in establishing the final scientific programme of the co-operative experiment MAREMF, with the participation of scientific institutions from Austria, Belgium, Germany, and Russia, for comprehensive studies of the magnetic field and of the electron component of the plasma during the Mars-96 mission.
