Objetivo Side-chain liquid crystalline polymers containing chiral centres in the hydrocarbon tail of the side groups have been shown to display chiral smectic C mesophases and to behave as ferroelectric materials, provided that appropriate smectogenic monomers are used as raw materials. These polymers are presently being investigated very actively, in view of their potential for application as among othet things, display devices, transducers, and pyroelectric detectors. Very few examples are known, so far, of copolymers displaying titled smectic phases. There is no example in scientific literature of copolymers showing chiral smectic C phases induced by chiral centres contained in the flexible spacer of the side groups of one of the comonomers.This project is aimed at the production of new side-chain liquid crystalline copolymers displaying chiral smectic C phases indicated by the presence of a chiral carbon atom in the flexible spacers, and the study of their ferroelectric and orientational behaviour. New chiral and achiral acrylates will be synthesized and their phase behaviour and structure will be studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction, polarized optical microscopy (POM), pyro- and piezo-electric techniques (PPET) etc. Selected mixtures of the monomers will be polymerized by solution polymerization and by photopolymerization of sandwiched monomeric mesophases. The molecular structure, the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the copolymers will be identified by spectroscopic methods (IR, NMR), and by size exclusion chromatography. The phase behaviour and the structure of the mesophases of the copolymers will be studied by DSC, POM, and X-ray diffraction. The ferroelectric properties of the copolymers using PPET and their linear optical and orientation behaviour in electric and magnetic fields will be studied.
