Electronic structure of high-temperature superconductors

Objetivo

A new family of mercury-based cuprate superconductors has recently been discovered. These exhibit a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) significantly higher than all other known superconductors. Many investigations are likely to be performed on them in the near future. For most of these investigations high quality single crystals are required.

The scientific groups in St. Petersburg will investigate the influence of crystallization conditions and post-growth treatment on the crystal structure perfection and superconducting properties of mercury-based cuprate crystals. The synthesis methods will be elaborated on this basis, and high quality single crystals will be obtained for electronic structure investigations. These crystals will be characterized by the x-ray diffraction method and MMA. The lattice structure and the exact stoichiometry will be investigated by neutron scattering techniques at Saclay.

The groups in the EU will investigate the electronic structure by a variety of spectroscopies such as EELS, ARUPS, XAS, STM, TEM, IR, Raman. By comparison with similar experiments performed on Hg-based and other cuprate superconductors with lower Tc, a contribution to a better understanding of the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity will be achieved.
