Objetivo In the proposed project, we intend to focus on the elucidation of mechanisms and on the obtention of quantitative spectral and kinetic data for the photochemical processes that occur upon interaction of the major pollutants of atmospheric and indoor air (NOx, ozone, VOC, and CO) with solid catalysts. The main emphasis will be placed on those solids whose composition is most similar to atmospheric solid aerosol particles (oxides of Al, Mg, Si, Zn and soot) and on the semiconductor oxides (bulk and nanodispersed TiO2) which are widely used in indoor and closed system air purification systems. The key surface intermediates which are involved in the photochemical processes will be examined using IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, EPR, and TDS. The Research program includes the following major tasks: - Mechanistic, kinetic, and spectroscopic studies of the effect of selected solids modeling atmospheric aerosol particles on the fundamental atmospheric equilibrium between NOx, oxygen and ozone; - Searching for elimination of hazardous ozone formation upon mineralization of organics in the presence of NOx on semiconductor photocatalysis; - Study of the possibility of extending the wavelength of TiO2 photocatalysts into the visible region by creating intrinsic defects; - Development of novel photocatalysts based on titania nanoparticles encapsulated in microporous and mesoporous matrices. The final scientific, environmental, and social objectives of the projects are to apply the obtained knowledge for improving the quality of atmospheric and indoor or closed system air. Nowadays, it is obvious that the air quality has a great impact on the public health. It is believed that the data obtained may lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms of heterogeneous photochemical atmospheric processes and their contribution to the global atmospheric chemistry. From the application point of view, the obtained knowledge might be useful for improving the performance of commercially manufactured air purification systems. The demand for such systems at the world market has been steadily growing during recent years. The research consortium is composed of five partners from France, Italy, Denmark and Russia who possess complementary areas of expertise essential for the project and makes it possible to unite the efforts in achieving the fundamental understanding of the factors that influence the basic photocatalytic processes occurring on solid particles of atmospheric aerosols.
