Cel The purpose of the research is to reduce the consumption of primary electrical energy in a building by avoiding mechanical ventilation and using light directing systems for daylight and cooling by combining solar collectors with a heat pump. Mechanical ventilation is avoided. Natural ventilation is also used as a source of cooling. All offices are naturally ventilated through openable windows. During times of wind stagnation, fresh air is drawn in by the temperature difference created by heat exchangers near the openings, that also condition the air prior to its entering the atrium. wind tunnel tests and detailed computer simulations were necessary to design the atrium's opening and control systems. Light directing systems provide sufficient daylighting far into the offices facing the atrium. The most effective outer facade was designed by investigating light and thermal fluxes through different wall systems. The result was the installation of a wall with transparent insulation material between two sheets of glass. The thermal mass of the construction stores and balances these gains. Automatically controlled low-e coated blinds provide additional insulation during the night and control light and heat flux during the day. In summer, a recently developed thermal heat pump uses solar-thermal heat from the roof collectors as for cooling. Back-up will be provided by district heating. A feature of an evaporation pond linked to an artificial aquifer acts as heat sink and seasonal storage. The aquifer is fed from rainwater and recycles water for the lavatories. In winter, the aquifer and thermal collectors become secondary heat sources while the thermal heat pump uses district heating for motive energy.
