All offices use natural ventilation and natural light, making use of windows. Theaim of this project was to design a building, the Micro-Electronic Centre in Duisburg,in the most efficient way to save electrical energy without sacrificing the comfortstandards of the office or the lighting standards for computer equipped offices.This would be achieved by reducing primary electricity consumption for lighting,heating/cooling and ventilation using daylight directing systems, avoidingmechanical ventilation, favouring natural ventilation, precooling of air by groundpipes, and air-conditioning by means of a combination of solar collectors with aheat pump. The building was designed and built.
