MULTI-SENSOR HIGH RESOLUTION INTELLIGENT MARINE OBSERVATION OF OCEAN FLOOR IN CONTINENTAL SHELVES

Ziel

The objective of the project is to prove the feasibility of a new concept for an oceanographic imaging system in coastal zones (depth < 100 m) based on three main ideas: i) high resolution passiveactive sensors; ii) multisensor data fusion for 3d registration, and iii) intelligent interactive regulation.
A new oceanographic imaging system for coastal zones was designed and its feasibility investigated. The system has high resolution passive and active sensors, multibeam sonar and a low light level charge coupled device (CCD) camera aboard a remotely operated vehicle. Multisensors provide data for 3-dimensional reconstruction. The system features artificial intelligence for enhance its ability to gather data.
It is a synergic combination of complementary sensors in a data fusion process combined with artificial intelligence to achieve the best tuning of the different sub-systems in the context of underwater applications. The sensors are a high resolution multibeam sonar (frequency > 500 kHz, resolution < 0,2o) and a low light level CCD camera (sensitivity 2VaJcm2). The sonar provides directly the distances, and a dynamic stereo vision process has to be done with the camera to extract the 3d range map. To improve the reliability of the sensors' observations and the accuracy of the 3d range maps, the multisensor data fusion will be performed under the control of a Knowledge Based System depending upon the application.
