Objetivo IN THIS PROJECT, BEECH WOOD HAS TO BE IMPROVED BY MAKING IT DURABLE, REDUCING THE SHRINKAGE AND SWELLING PROPERTIES, AND IF DESIRED STAINING THE WOOD. THE END PORTION OF THIS INVESTIGATION IS TO ANALYSE SOME PROPERTIES OF THE UPGRADED BEECH WOOD. PLANNING OF THE RESEARCH: 1. IF CHEMICALS ARE USED TO ACHIEVE THE DESIRED QUALITY OF THE BEECH WOOD, THE LEACHABILITY OF THE CHEMICALS IN THIS UPGRADED MATERIAL HAS TO BE TESTED BY PONDING THE WOOD AND ANALYSING THE WATER IN LEACHED COMPONENTS. 2. REDUCTION IN SHRINKAGE AND SWELLING OF THE UPGRADED BEECH WOOD HAS TO BE ANALYSED. 3. THE DURABILITY OF GLUE JOINTS MADE IN THIS UPGRADED BEECH HAS TO BE TESTED BY ACCELERATED AND OUTDOOR DURABILITY TESTS. 4. THE DISCOLOURATION BY LIGHT WILL BE TESTED IN ACCELERATED TESTS. 5. WEATHERING RESISTANCE OF THE UPGRADED BEECH WILL BE TESTED BY ACCELERATED WEATHERING TESTS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: UPGRADED BEECH WOOD WILL BE DELIVERED BY CTIB. ALL THE TESTS TO BE CARRIED OUT ARE WELL KNOWN ROUTINE LABORATORY TESTS, PERFORMED REGULARLY IN THE HOUTINSTITUUT TNO.
