Objective Neff is a lent viral protein critical for AIDS pathogenesis. In addition to increasing HIV replication, Net has an independent role as a major pathogenicityfactor, as revealed by recent work in transgenic mice. This two-fold contribution of Neff to the pathogenesis of AIDS suggests that compounds that could block Neff unction would be potent anti-AIDS drugs. Despite this remarkable promise, Neff has so far not been exploited as a therapeutic target. The objective of the proposed collaborative project is to extend the ongoing basic research in the individual laboratories of this consortium towards the common and more applied goal of transforming Neff into a therapeutic target that would be attractive and readily available to the pharmaceutical industry for exploitation in drug discovery, goal that conforms well to objectives of the thematic priority 1.1.1. -2.2.1 of thee Fifth Framework Programme.
