Development and risk assessment of a field-based portable biosensor using genetically-modified bioluminescent bacteria

Objetivo

Genetically modified (GM) bioluminescent whole cell microbial biosensors offer great potential for the measurement of pollutants in contaminated land, surface and groundwaters; but cannot currently be used in the field due to the risk of GM release. The project will research various physical and biological strategies for containment of the GM bacteria within the biosensor instrument and conduct a lab- based risk assessment and field trials at various European sites. The project is led by a biosensor company and has workpackages for selection and engineering of strains, comparison of cell immobilisation techniques, development of prototypes, risk assessment and field trials, and project coordination and dissemination. The result will be prototype portable biosensors, which can be operated with a negligible and thus acceptable risk of GM release.
