Objetivo In INFOSOND, nine EU cities will cooperate to try and satisfy citizens' needs for electronic information and services. The project will be geared to the fast delivery of numerous facilities, ranging from enhanced, reliable and user-friendly administrative or leisure services accessed at public multimedia kiosks, to voice, mail and video intercommunication on employment and welfare matters between citizens, local government and firms. Through their telephone, cable television and other networks, these resources will incorporate interactive multimedia applications for the benefit of all at any time. The cities of Amaroussion, Antwerp, Joensuu, Nice, Nuremberg, Rotterdam, Stockholm, Strasbourg and Vienna, joined forces in a total project called INFOSOND to fulfil the user needs of their citizens with regard to electronic delivery of information and services. This INFOrmation and Services ON Demand project will offer a wide range of opportunities from easy access to public, professional, economic, educational, scientific and leisure information and services, to voice, mail and video between citizens, local government and enterprises. Through the infrastructure of their telephone, cable television and other networks, the European cities will provide these electronic facilities in a user-friendly way with interactive, multi-media applications. Their inhabitants and their visitors, using a PC, a tv-set or a kiosk, any time of the day of the week, will benefit from this all.The INFOrmation and Services ON Demand is an open 'common information space' which can be best described as the junction between suppliers and users of information. User-friendly and self-explanatory multi-media applications will be offered 24h a day, 7 days a week at (multi-media) PC's, via interactive CATV and multi-media kiosks provided in 'one-stop-shops', 'neighbourhood centers' or public places. The principal deliverables are shown in the following table:One of the aims of INFOSOND is to build a bridge between the available information and the applications. It navigates a request from one of the applications to the information resources and takes care of the necessary information. The selected information is then presented back to the application. The impact of this system will result in making better decisions, getting better and faster information and services, allowing better communication with local government. SME business will benefit from better communication; the possibilities of teleworking will grow; health-care and specific services for disabled and elderly people will improve and the system will offer better opportunities for the un-employed.
