Home-working - A Measure to Reduce Energy Consumption

Objetivo

To examine the energy and pollution implications of dispersing traditional office work to the emploees homes or local offices in the suburbs or rural areas rather than city centre offices.

The project will first identify the energy and pollution associated with commuter transport. Statistical information on commuter profiles will need to be idntified and the energy and pollution associated with various modes and densities of transport will be invstigted. A brief assessment of alternative modes of transport, such as electric vehicles, will be
included in this process.

The consumption of energy by city centre businesses will thn be studied and estimates for potential energy savings from reduced occupancy will be made. Likewise, the increased consumption of energy through employees working at home or in local offices will be estimated. The avoided consumption in transport and centralised office faciliities will be
balanced against the expectd inctrease in consumption in the home or locval office.
