The European laboratory volcanoes
The European Commission, DG XII, has recently published the proceedings of the second workshop on the European laboratory volcanoes, held in Santorini, Greece, in May 1996. The conference was attended by around 192 European volcanologists from 11 countries, including 12 young European scientists funded by the European Science Foundation. The aim of the workshop was to provide an overview of the results of volcanic research projects financed under the EU's Environment and Climate research programme. The final results of the laboratory volcanoes projects were presented, covering magma plumbing and feeding systems, magma evolution and volatile composition, the eruptive mechanisms and physical volcanology, simulation and modelling of volcanic processes and volcanic monitoring hazard assessment and risk evaluation. The results of the project entitled "Physics of ascent, degassing and fragmentation of magma", as well as new projects to be financed under the Environment and Climate research programme, were also presented. The publication contains the results of a selection of projects presented, focusing on those which were completed from the Santorini, Etna, Piton de la Fournaise, Furnas and Teide volcano laboratories, as well as the conclusions presented at the end of the conference by a representative of the European Commission, DG XII.
