The second and third in a series of volumes published by the European Commission, DG XII, on health research in developing countries are now available. The research projects described have been funded under the EU's programme for Scientific and Technological Cooperation with Developing Countries (INCO-DC), and its predecessor STD, for Scientific and Technological Development in the field of life sciences and technologies for development. The first volume in the series provided an overview of "health systems research", while the second is dedicated to research in virology, bacteriology and non-communicable diseases, and the third to parasitology. The publications present an overview of the joint research projects of the STD and INCO-DC programmes in the health field. Topics of interest covered in the second volume cover diseases such as HIV/AIDS, mycobacteria, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis and non-communicable diseases. The third volume covers areas such as malaria, trypanosomiasis, filariases and other parasites. Information in the annexes details the aims of research partnerships between the EU and developing countries, provides an overview of the Fourth RTD Framework Programme and lists collaborating institutes and scientists as well as research projects by topic.
