A delegation from the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), will visit the US on 25-30 October 2007. This will mark the first time legislators from Europe and the US will meet to discuss energy and related policies. The ITRE delegation will begin their visit at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and conclude with meetings with Congressional leaders in Washington DC. The ITRE Committee Delegation will visit the US in order to gain an insight in US Science and Energy related policies and activities. The delegation will have an in-depth look in US Research and Energy facilities such as the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the ITER Nuclear Fusion Facility. Various meetings are scheduled in Washington DC with the State Department on energy policy, the Office of Science in the US Department of Energy as well as visits to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Visitor Center and the European Commission Delegation to the US. Moreover, MEPs will meet US industry representatives from General Electric (GE) and Westinghouse. The Delegation includes ten ITRE Committee MEPs from various political parties and representatives from other Parliamentary bodies such as the Scientific Technologies Options Assessment (STOA). Jonathan Evans MEP, Chairman of the EP Delegation for Relations with the US will join the Delegation. The overall objective of this five-day visit is to provide an overview for the ITRE delegation members on recent energy and R&D initiatives in the US and also on key topics such as sustainable energy production and energy efficiency technologies. According to Giles Chichester, MEP and Chair of the Visiting Delegation, “The purpose of this visit by members of the ITRE (Industry, Research and Energy) Committee of the European Parliament to the USA is twofold. First we want to learn more, and at first hand, about work being undertaken but the US authorities in the three key areas of competence of our committee, particularly in the fields of research and energy. Second we aim through exchanges of view to explain what is happening on the European front and seek out synergies arising from shared knowledge and mutual interest. The full program contains plenty of opportunities to do just that and I hope we will contribute to enhanced EU-USA co-operation and mutual understanding.” The visit is regarded as a valuable forum for US and EU policy makers to exchange views on current R&D and energy issues.
