New PLATON+ project launched

A new EU initiative, project PLATON+ (http://www.platonplus.net), was launched in January 2008 aiming to increase awareness of European research in socio-economic sciences and humanities and popularise the use of these results in other, technology oriented research themes.

Research in the field of socio-economic sciences and humanities has proven to be of high value for a variety of other disciplines as it can provide useful insights and solutions to arising social, economic, political and cultural issues. The main idea of PLATON+ is therefore to operate as a central hub in helping to enhance the integration of socio-economic research in the technology oriented research areas under the 7th Framework Programme. In order to achieve its aim, a wide range of activities will be developed in order to assist researchers from other areas in understanding which socio-economic issues are most important for them and how they can benefit from them. The elaboration of policy-oriented publications, the organisation of policy dialogue meetings all over Europe as well as the implementation of training courses will enable the exchange of ideas and diffusion of research results. In addition, a web-portal will be developed to facilitate access to valuable information on socio-economic research and promote the participation of organisations active in the respective field, in projects under technology oriented areas. The project activities are addressed to four target groups: the research community (in the socio-economic sciences and humanities field as well as in other technology-oriented research areas), policy/decision makers, business community and civil society organisations. The project is financed under EU 7th Framework Programme for research in the Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities area and will be elaborated within 30 months by a multidisciplinary consortium consisting of 12 European partners from 10 countries: Greece, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Ireland, France and Turkey.
