The European project MARE aims at working closely with users and experts in carrying out a technology and foresight analysis in the field of Assistive Technologies (AT). The project MARE is a joint initiative of EBA, an Italian consulting company operating in the sector of ICT and eInclusion and IAE (The Inclusion Alliance for Europe), a Romanian European Economic Interest Group. This 18 month project that was launched on the 1st September 2008, is co-financed through the EU’s 7th Framework Programme. The project is currently setting up a large AT User Community and Expert Group who will be actively involved in the project activities. When analysing the development of AT and identifying the barriers to their full development, the project intends to give a central role to the User needs and requirements through implementing a “User Centred Approach”. AT experts will then assist in formulating technology foresight recommendations for the research community and EC decision makers. Ira Vater from EBA, the project co-ordinator, commented, “Europe will face an increasingly ageing population structure in the upcoming years which means that there will be more need for Assistive Technologies for the elderly, disabled and persons with special needs. It is of prime importance to pay attention to the needs, wants and limitations of these users when formulating recommendations for the future development of Assistive Technologies.” In order to reach all potential and interested users and experts, MARE has launched two calls to join the User Community and to become an Expert, that will remain open during the entire project duration. Further information about the project and/or the open calls can be obtained from: - the MARE website at: www.mareproject.eu - the MARE team by writing to: infodesk@mareproject.eu
