The ScanBalt Academy today in Kalmar discussed the ecology of the Baltic Sea prior to the official opening tomorrow of the 8th ScanBalt Forum. Ecology of the Baltic Sea is a key issue of the recently released EU Baltic Sea Region trategy as shared actions are necessary in order to promote a cleaner environment rich in plant and animal life and without risks for humans. The President of the ScanBalt Academy Professor emeritus Kaare Norum, former Rector of Oslo University, says: ”Knowledge based on science is a prerequisite to achieve ambitious environmental goals for the Baltic Sea. The discussion today clearly showed we have the competencies within the region which can provide the solutions. But it is necessary with strong political support in order to promote cross-border research. A solution could be a Baltic Sea Region Fund for Research, Education and Innovation”. The objective of the 8th ScanBalt Forum is to promote the Baltic Sea Region as a globally competitive green valley and health region. The ScanBalt Academy is also strongly involved as a supporting partner in the EU Baltic Sea Region flagship project “Health region” which has an ambition to promote a better life for the citizens of the region.
