The role of third sector organizations in changing welfare systems

The base of the research is the thesis of plurality of changing or emerging welfare systems in Central and Eastern European societies, which leads to the thesis of plurality and diversity of trends and the importance and role of the third sector in these societies.

Questions that the CINEFOGO researchers strive to answer in this work package are amongst others: i) What is the position of third sector organizations in the hierarchy ii) What is the character of third sector organizations? ii) What is the role of third sector organizations in the overall welfare system? The evidence and notion of plurality/diversity derives from third sector research in the given societies. Most of these investigations are however carried out within individual societies and thereby the analysis included elements of third sector organizations relevant to the aim of that specific organization. The aim of the CINEFOGO researchers is to go beyond the isolated investigation of the third sector in order to explain all major determinants of various trends in the development of this sector in individual societies. This will be done by implementing the concept of welfare system as an analytical instrument. There will be a specific focus on the differences in the importance and roles that third sector organizations adopt in individual societies.
