Research drives renewal of European forest-based industry with new call for transnational projects

Over 100 registered participants from 15 countries gather at the WoodWisdom-Net Research Programme seminar in Stockholm on 11th November, in association with the Forest-Based Sector Technology Platform Conference. ‘WoodWisdom-Net 2’ is a network of 19 national funding organizations launched under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union.

These 19 national funding organizations from 12 countries have joined forces to encourage researchers in transnational cooperation for innovative projects in forest-based value chains through the launching of a new call for research funding. The call “Sustainable, competitive processing and end-use concepts for forest-based industries” focuses on applied research and development projects together with the wood products industry. Themes and topics of the call have been defined in dialogues between the national funding organizations and industry at national and European levels. The call opens on 11th November 2009 and closes on 23rd February 2010. Funding of up to 15 million Euros is available for research and development projects for a maximum of three years. ‘The aim of WoodWisdom-Net 2 is to strengthen and deepen the cooperation at the European level using national funding for shared projects and to prepare us for long lasting and bigger challenges in the future’ says the coordinator of the WoodWisdom-Net 2, Dr Ilmari Absetz from Tekes, the Finnish Funding Organization for Technology and Innovation. ‘Hopefully we will engage the industry to work together at the European level, so that together with the multi-national researchers we can affect the future.’ In four joint calls planned before 2015, the network targets up to 100 million Euros project volume.
