Young journalists visit research labs in Rome
Seven European journalism students were in the ENEA - Casaccia Research Centre (located near Rome) from 9-13 November. Divided by groups, the students visited different laboratories focusing on climate science, food genetics, photovoltaics and electric storage research. RELATE project brings scientists face to face with next generation journalists in a two-way learning curve. The reporters had the opportunity to shadow and interview researchers, with the aim to write daily blogs on this unique experience and produce a final article, audio or video piece to be pitched out to interested media. This should demystify the research, be engaging, balanced and accurate while giving researchers a tool to communicate with the society. The young journalists are now preparing their stories to be pitched to mainstream and science media with the help of the European Journalism Centre. The programme aims to build bridges across Europe between scientists and journalists and create opportunities of collaborations and cooperation for the interests of the society at large. It is also a showcase for cutting-edge cooperation between the EU and candidate countries. MORE LABS, MORE ROUNDS RELATE project was launched early this month with the visit of five students to the Nanotechnology Research Center of the Bilkent University in Ankara (Turkey). Later this month, five more students will visit EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) in Switzerland. A second application window is open until 30 November 2009, feeding the following rounds in March and November 2010. Journalism students, particularly from new member states and candidate countries, are encouraged to apply online at: http://relateproject.eu/(opens in new window).
