Social Sciences and Humanities researchers and their experiences with FP7 - Recommendations for the future funding of EU research

With regard to EU research funding programmes, what should be the balance between smaller, targeted research projects and larger, strategic ones? Should there be more room for bottom-up activities?

These are only two examples of questions posed in the ongoing public EU stakeholder consultation on the “Green Paper on a Common Strategic Framework for future EU Research and Innovation Funding“ that the report “SSH Experiences with FP7 - a Commentary“ answers from the specific perspective of Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities (SSH). As the survey-based report reveals, the answers of the SSH research community are: SSH researchers prefer small and medium-scale collaborative research projects and would welcome the inclusion of bottom-up funding possibilities within the context of collaborative project funding. “SSH Experiences with FP7 - a Commentary“ focuses on the experience of SSH researchers with the 7th EU Framework Programme for Research (FP7), their assessment of the programme, and a list of recommendations for future EU research funding programmes. By doing so, it provides essential background reading in the current debate about the EU “Green Paper” on a “Common Strategic Framework for EU Research and Innovation funding“. “SSH Experiences with FP7 – a Commentary“ gives a number of recommendations for improving EU research funding for SSH in the future. One key message: a distinct programme for SSH research to address the societal challenges that Europe and the world are facing is indispensible. The results presented in the report stress that the primary motivation for SSH researchers to participate in this challenging programme lies in the collaborative international research environment and interdisciplinary opportunities EU research projects offer. On the other hand SSH researchers are concerned about the comparably low budget of the FP7 “Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities” programme that has led to a substantial number of excellent proposals not being funded. The report is based on a survey of SSH researchers and scholars around Europe and beyond, carried out by the EU-funded NET4SOCIETY project. NET4SOCIETY is a network of National Contact Points assisting SSH researchers’ engagement in FP7. More than 450 researchers from 39 countries contributed to the survey via an online questionnaire, and an additional 100 researchers in 29 countries were interviewed last summer. “SSH Experiences with FP7 – a Commentary“ is now available for download from the NET4SOCIETY website: http://www.net4society.eu/public/survey(opens in new window) The EU Consultation on a “Common Strategic Framework for EU Research and Innovation funding“ will be open until 20 May 2011: http://ec.europa.eu/research/csfri/index_en.cfm?pg=home(opens in new window)
