CIBERSAM will have the leadership in the European Mental Health Research Roadmap
The Centre for Biomedical Research in Mental Health Network (CIBERSAM) will be responsible for setting the priorities and the funding for mental health research from the European Commission (EC) until 2014. This was decided by the executive body of the European Union, by selecting the project of the consortium coordinated by CIBERSAM from all the proposals submitted. The project "A Roadmap for Mental Health Research in Europe" is funded by the 7th Framework Programme "Health" from the European Commission and has a duration of 3 years. The consortium consists of 13 European institutions of excellence in Mental Health research from Spain, France, The Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Italy, Hungary and the UK. According to statements by the Scientific Director of the CIBER of Mental Health, Dr. Celso Arango, "This project is of utmost strategic importance and enables CIBERSAM to exercise its leadership in research in Psychiatry in Europe." The success of collaborative research has been the result of work lasting for over two years. On a regional level, "Europe has one of the highest levels of professional specialists and in coordinated policies on Mental Health", states the World Health Organization. On October 30, 2009 CIBERSAM, with support from the Ministry of Science and Innovation, hosted the II International Mental Health Research Network Meeting in Madrid, attended by representatives of European National Research Networks in Mental Health and the Directorate General of Research and Health of the European Commission. The result of this meeting was the "Madrid Declaration", which led to the origin of the call for the Roadmap by the EC. Several meetings held with the European Networks, which revealed the need to integrate, promote and coordinate research in Mental Health among all EU countries, concluded that CIBERSAM should coordinate the Roadmap. The main drivers of this project in the network centre, Dr. José Luis Ayuso, PI University Hospital de la Princesa in Madrid, and Dr. Josep Maria Haro, PI at Parque Sanitario Sant Joan de Deu in Barcelona, have received the formal congratulations from the Secretary-General of Health, Ministry of Health, Social Affairs and Equality, Mr José Martínez Olmos. "The collaboration of all research groups and the Spanish government has been crucial. The project ROAMER will allow collaboration of scientists, patients, relatives and managers. Through participation, it will be a plan for everyone" said Dr. Haro, project coordinator.
