Commission combats air pollution
In the Spring, the European Commission will issue a new communication on combating air pollution, Commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard said last week in a European Parliament debate, in which she welcomed MEPs' support for an effective monitoring mechanism. Commissioner Bjerregaard explained that part of the legislation, which would limit the sulphur content of bunker oil to 1.5%, would mean a reduction of 1 million tons from the 3 million tons currently emitted throughout the European Union. After the debate, the common position on a Commission proposal to reduce pollution from greenhouse gases by introducing strict monitoring measures, was approved with a number of amendments.
