AMIGA project a new EU funded project

AMIGA - Assessing and Monitoring the Impacts of Genetically modified plants (GMPs) on Agro-ecosystems: new EU project, FP7-KBBE.

On the 12th and 13th of December 2011, the consortium forming AMIGA project gathered in the “city of stones” Matera, in Italy. Opened with an introductory welcome by the project coordinator, Mr. Salvatore Arpaia, from ENEA, the meeting successfully launched the working activities of the partners involved. The AMIGA consortium gathers 22 partners, from 15 EU countries and Argentina. The project officer from the EC, Mr. Jens Hoegel, congratulated the coordinator and praised the “high scientific level of competences of the project thanks to the expertise of the partners” coming from well reputed research centres and universities leading the 11 work packages that compose the project. Mr. Hoegel agreed on the evaluators’ comments that successfully evaluated the project, submitted early in January 2011, and he acknowledged” the great knowledge of the current state of the art the authors have”. Nevertheless, Mr. Hoegel stressed on the fact that the “success of the project will be determined on the basis of scientific achievements AND on a very well elaborated communication strategy” and that the real work is starting now. The coordinator, Mr. Arpaia, set a frame of rules that will be followed during the 48 months duration and established monitoring and assessment phases to make sure that all tasks are efficiently executed and all objectives could be achieved. The partners have immediately shown a willingness to collaborate with each other and agreed on the principles of sharing data and intermediary results. They set up a well defined methodology to facilitate the collection of results and the comparison of these in the different countries. The management board will play a central role in leading the communication outside the consortium and in assessing and monitoring the work packages activities. During the second day, the work packages leaders grouped already to start the initial working phases and establish the cooperation framework, including a list of impacts to be achieved and a plan for the next meetings to be held in the following months. Overall, the project is very ambitious and good cooperation among partners will be essential for the successful results. The two days meeting ended with a detailed action plan established by Dr. Arpaia who expressed his satisfaction for the excellent teamwork shown already in these first days and pro-active approach demonstrated by all AMIGA partners.
