Improving research collaboration between Africa and Europe
The survey will help to identify major factors hampering research collaboration between both continents and to find solutions to improve and increase European participation in African research projects. The survey also assesses the socio-economic impact of the existing collaboration. Final results of the survey will be presented to EU officials, industry and the general public at a seminar in Brussels. The online survey questionnaire is available at http://tinyurl.com/PAERIP(opens in new window). The survey is on-going and you are encouraged to participate in it if you belong to the European research community and have experience in scientific collaboration with African researchers, specifically with African research infrastructures. The survey issued in early May explores the experiences of European researchers in their participation in African research infrastructures. The focus of the study is on the European research community, including researchers, European research programme managers, as well as African scientists and research infrastructure owners. Altogether, more than 100 people were invited to participate in the survey which will identify ways to improve collaboration between African and European researchers. The final outcome of the PAERIP survey, including recommendations on how to improve European access to African research infrastructures, will be presented at the seminar entitled “African European Research Infrastructures Cooperation: Towards a stronger research infrastructure cooperation between Europe and Africa” to be held on May 16 2012 in Brussels. The seminar will present the first findings and facilitate a discussion with representatives of the European Parliament and the European Commission, delegates from European and African research institutions, and PAERIP consortium members. The aim of the seminar will be to identify the way forward in terms of policy options arising from PAERIP findings, related support mechanisms in Horizon 2020 and instruments from the Joint Africa-EU Strategy, adopted by Heads of Government at the December 2007 Lisbon Summit.
