Skill and technical literacy levels need to be boosted and further action is needed to develop an enterprise culture in Europe, so that new ideas and start-up companies can flourish, according to a European Commission report on the skill shortage within Information Technologies (IT). The Commission report deals with exploiting the potential of the information revolution. It finds that over 500,000 IT job vacancies in the EU are unfilled because of the lack of skilled staff. The Commission calls on the Member States to take into account the Information society in their national employment action plans.
