Youth strive together with online experts, policymakers, and industry to make the internet a better place for all
More than 350 stakeholders in the field of children online safety, including young entrepreneurs, digital champions, policy makers and researchers are coming together to discuss the latest trends, risks and solutions related to child online safety. At the heart of the discussion will be: the encouragement of online entrepreneurship and creativity; digital and citizenship skills; and how policymakers and industry can listen to young users, exploring the potential of online technology to be "safer by design". Youth representatives of the 30 countries in the Insafe network will lead several sessions on harnessing innovation, encouraging diversity, and keeping the internet safe. Moreover, European young entrepreneurs are expected to actively participate in the discussions with European leaders from the business and political world, suggest their views and tell their personal experiences on how the internet can become a catalyst for innovation and creativity. The agenda includes contributions from: Robert Madelin, Director General, DG CONNECT, European Commission; Sir Graham Watson, MEP; Erika Mann, Former MEP now at Facebook; two representatives of EC Vice-President Neelie Kroes advisory circles: Linda Liukas, Digital Champion of Finland, and Alja Isakovic, Young Advisor of Slovenia, representatives from Facebook, Telefonica, Digital Europe and other companies; young entrepreneurs, and bloggers. “We all need to take an active role in shaping internet, and the annual Safer Internet Forum is the very place to do this,” saysJanice Richardson, Coordinator of the Insafe network since it was set up in 2004. The Safer Internet Forum is organized and funded by the European Commission with the assistance of European Schoolnet, a network of 30 Ministries of Education, under the Safer Internet Programme as part of the European Strategy for a Better Internet for Children. The Safer Internet Programme supports projects and events to help create a safer online environment for children and young people, as well as to promote industry self-regulation and international co-operation. The activities cover awareness raising, fighting illegal content, filtering and content labelling, involving the civil society in child online safety issues and creating a solid database of information related to the use of new technologies by young people.
