Six Installation Grants awarded

Heidelberg, 11 December 2013 — Six life science researchers will receive the 2013 EMBO Installation Grants. The grants will assist the scientists to relocate and set up their research groups in the Czech Republic, Poland, Portugal, and Turkey. EMBO Installation Grants are awarded annually to strengthen science in selected member states.

“EMBO Installation Grants assist talented young group leaders in coming back to their home countries where they establish laboratories. The grants help them and their countries to get closer to the European centres of research and education,” said Gerlind Wallon, Installation Grants Programme Manager and EMBO Deputy Director. One of the grantees will move to Poland, one to the Czech Republic, two to Turkey and two to Portugal. They will relocate to these countries from universities and institutes in the United Kingdom, France, Austria and the United States. EMBO Member Leszek Kaczmarek of the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology in Warsaw, Poland, commented: “The success of the Installation Grants relies on the high selection standards of the programme, the commitment of the host countries that pay for the grants, and the networking made available by EMBO.” Kaczmarek is the new chair of the Installation Grants board. He follows on from Claudio Sunkel of the University of Porto in Portugal, who was involved in setting up the scheme and chaired the board since 2006. The scientists receive 50,000 euros annually for three to five years from their host countries. This makes it easier for them to establish their research groups in the host country. The grantees will also enter the prestigious network of EMBO Young Investigators, which helps them to integrate further into the European scientific community. 64 researchers have been funded by EMBO Installation Grants since the inception of the programme in 2006. The next application deadline for EMBO Installation Grants is 15 April 2014.
