Global Biobank Week: Towards Harmony in Biobanking

Biobanking and BioMolecular resources Research Infrastructure - European Research Infrastructure Consortium (BBMRI-ERIC), European, Middle Eastern and African Society for Biopreservation and Biobanking (ESBB), and International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) joined forces to organize the first Global Biobank Week, which is taking place from 13 to 15 September 2017 in Stockholm, Sweden.

The central theme of Global Biobank Week is global harmonization of biobanking activities. Biobanking experts, scientists, policy makers, and patient representatives will also discuss best practices, reproducibility of data from specimen research, donors’ rights and public trust, as well as environmental issues and efforts to foster international collaboration. With an action-packed programme, highlights include talks from the keynote speakers Gregory Biden, the Director of the Biden Cancer Initiative at the Biden Foundation, and Jan-Eric Litton, Professor at Karolinska Institute and former Director General of BBMRI-ERIC; ‘The Route’, an interactive event which simulates a real workflow of a biobank; the GBW Tool Booth that exhibits tools beneficial to the biobanking community; and a networking dinner with over 400 attendees. Global Biobank Week is expected to bring together around 1000 participants from all over the world representing the wide variety of stakeholders in biobanking. It provides a global platform for comprehensive discussion and collaboration on activities important for biobanking and biopreservation of samples and data for biological and environmental research to improve health care and decrease the burden of disease worldwide and to focus on areas ripe for discovery and novel innovation, which will drive future research and discovery. Please visit Global Biobank Week website: http://globalbiobankweek.org/. Further information: BBMRI-ERIC (http://bbmri-eric.eu/) is a pan-European research infrastructure which provides access to quality-controlled human biological samples, such as blood, tissues, cells or DNA, and associated clinical and research data. It aims to establish, operate and develop a pan-European distributed research infrastructure of biobanks and biomolecular resources to facilitate the access to resources as well as facilities and to support high-quality biomolecular and medical research. BBMRI-ERIC comprises 19 member states and one international organisation, making it one of the largest research infrastructures for health research in Europe. ESBB (www.esbb.org) is a society for people involved in the collection and storage of biological materials from all species. ESBB's mission is to advance the field of biobanking in support of research relating to healthcare, agriculture and the environment. Through annual conferences and other activities, ESBB provides a platform for dissemination of knowledge and discussion of issues, and through its working groups it unites members in problem solving activities. ESBB's focus of interest is on Europe, the Middle East and Africa. ISBER (www.isber.org) is a global organisation which creates opportunities for sharing ideas and innovations in biobanking and harmonises approaches to evolving challenges for biological and environmental repositories. ISBER fosters collaboration, creates education and training opportunities, provides an international showcase for state-of-the-art policies, processes, and research findings, and innovative technologies, products, and services. Together, these activities promote best practices that cut across the broad range of repositories that ISBER serves.
