Living together: Missions for Shaping the Future. An Agenda for the next European Research and Innovation Programme
“Living together: Missions for Shaping the Future. An Agenda for the next European Research and Innovation Programme from the Humanities and Social Sciences” (12/2017) A joint statement on transdisciplinary ‘missions’ for the next EU Research and Innovation Framework Programme – by HERA Humanities in the European Research Area in collaboration with ALLEA All European Academies and seven further European research organisations. How should research and innovation funding in Europe look like in the next framework programme? What changes are needed, which topics need to be tackled? What would be the contributions of the humanities and social sciences? The joint paper, "Living Together: Missions for Shaping the Future", aims to contribute to an agenda for inter- and transdisciplinary European Research and Innovation seen from the perspective of the humanities and social sciences. In "Living Together" we argue that today's challenges are "not merely economic, technological and political, they are also social, cultural, legal and ethical." This calls for "concerted efforts within and outside Europe, cutting across borders, cultures, languages, disciplines, sectors and institutions". We suggest to further discuss the concept of "missions" which has been brought up by the High Level Group on maximizing the impact of EU Research & Innovation Programmes in the “LAB –FAB – APP”-report (2017). We state that mission-oriented research needs to engender transformation and stipulate that innovation is more than technology and needs room for bottom-up approaches. We also call for integration of countries and regions within and outside of Europe. As exemplary "missions" targeting social and cultural transformation, and well aware that these are not exhaustive, we put forward four themes for future research and innovation: - Living together: Building sustainable, open and democratic societies for the future - Catching up with innovation: Preparing for social consequences and embracing opportunities - Growing up and ageing in Europe: A good life and a dignified death - Truth, trust and expertise: Establishing trust for sustainable and legitimate governance. In this paper, HERA Humanities in the European Research Area and ALLEA, All European Academies teamed up together with ELI (European Law Institute), ESA (European Sociological Association), EuroScience, Global Young Academy, Net4Society (International network of National Contact Points (NCPs) for the Societal Challenge 6 in Horizon 2020), NORFACE (New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Cooperation in Europe) and Young Academy of Europe. It is a growing network of (at present) 26 European research funding organisations across 25 countries and is co-funded by the European Commission. HERA is open to collaboration with European and non-European funding organisations. To date, the partners, together with the European Commission, have pooled over 50 million EUR to fund 69 transnational humanities focused projects. In these projects 231 researchers, 206 post-Docs and 88 PhDs are working together with 173 associated partners from civil society and cultural institutions. HERA’s fourth call for proposals, “Public Spaces” has attracted a new generation of applicants, now under evaluation. More info about HERA can be found here: www.heranet.info
