The Commission of the European Communities has launched a call for proposals for a targeted project on hot-gas cleaning (HCG) within the framework of the THERMIE programme. With reference to Article 4 of the THERMIE Regulation, such an initiative may be taken in order to promote targeted projects where a need is not currently being met or where significant technological advance may be achieved. Hot-gas cleaning can, potentially, provide important technological advantages for pressurized fluidized bed combustion (PFBC) and for integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plants. The potential advantages of using HGC range from improved plant availability and simplification of the gas-processing stream to the improvement by several percentage points of power generation efficiency and a corresponding reduction of CO2 emissions. The present call for proposals concerns the first phase of the process, namely, the demonstration of hot-gas filtration (HGF) in a PFBC power generation system. Tenders will be published at an appropriate time for both the second phase, demonstration of the use of HGF in an IGCC system, and for a third phase which would envisage the demonstration of HGF combined with the demonstration of the removal of other pollutants with the aim of developing a complete HGC system. Projects in the first phase will aim to demonstrate the feasibility of achieving efficient and reliable operation of ceramic candle filters over a period of more than 10,000 hours at a temperature in the range of 850 degrees Celsius and at around 16 bar.
