The Commission of the European Communities calls for proposals concerning scientific and technical cooperation with Maghreb and the countries of the Mediterranean Basin. In the context of the 1993 AVICENNE initiative, several preparatory actions are being launched in order to explore the possibilities of such cooperation between the Community and Mediterranean third countries in two areas of mutual interest, namely, health care and water resources management: - Health systems research: Identification, evaluation and validation of strategies for health policy and allocation of health care; identification of the factors determining the participation of individuals and communities; - Research on diarrhoeal diseases, molecular biology and strategies for prevention and treatment. Particular attention should be paid to Amoebiasis. - Water: Hydrologic research on the Mediterranean Basin, namely resource characterization, including water recycling, and the potential for improved management of water resources. The Commission invites interested persons and organizations to present proposals for one, or a combination of, the specified areas. Joint projects should as a general rule include at least two independent partners in different Mediterranean third countries and at least one partner established in a Community Member State. The projects will be the subject of shared-cost research and technological development contracts. Proposed research may be applied (of a precompetitive nature) or fundamental. Pilot or demonstration projects are not eligible. The call is open to all persons, organizations and research institutes in the Member States of the European Community and in the third countries concerned (Algeria, Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Malta, occupied territories, Syria, Turkey and Tunisia). Full details together with proposal forms may be obtained from delegations of the European Communities in the non-Community Mediterranean countries, and from: Commission of the European Communities Directorate-General for Science, Research and Development (DG XII/G-4) "Scientific and Technological Cooperation with Developing Countries" AVICENNE Initiative 75 rue Montoyer B-1040 Brussels Telex COMEU B 21877; Fax +32-2-2363308
