The Commission of the European Communities has approved three Operational Programmes under the RETEX Community Initiative for the acceleration of the diversification of economic activities in regions heavily dependent on the textiles and clothing sector. The RETEX Initiative is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by the European Social Fund (ESF). All industrial sectors are eligible for Community aid in the context of this initiative, priority being given to projects which facilitate diversification. The three new Operational Programmes concern: - Greece. A total financial allocation over the period 1993-1997 of ECU 85.2 million in the areas of: Modernization of enterprises (automation of design and production systems); environmental improvement; creation of alternative economic activities; vocational training schemes; other support actions (market research, actions aiming to facilitate the access of SMEs to financial sources and to counselling. - Ireland. A total allocation of grants (1993-1997) amounting to ECU 9.2 million from the ERDF and ECU 2.3 million from the ESF, to address five key areas: Improving know-how (improvement in production methods, design and technology); cooperation schemes (inter alia including support to cooperation aiming to enhance the technical content of design courses, and the establishment of a centre of excellence for the clothing industry); support for SME design capability; vocational training; aid to reduce pollution. - Northern Ireland. A total indicative Community contribution of ECU 13 million (1993-1997) in the fields of: Improvement of business know-how; formation of groups of networks (to encourage group marketing, local area plan development, innovation, training); technical assistance; vocational training activities; improvement of the economic environment.
