European Commission adopts a new information and communication policy
Based on a proposal from Commissioner Joao De Deus Pinheiro, the European Commission adopted, on 30 June 1993, its new information and communication policy. Through this new policy, the Commission intends to provide political guidance by holding monthly discussions on the social and political situation in the Community and the implications for its information and communication strategy. It has decided to set up a top level strategy group to give broad policy advice and to alert the Commission to significant shifts in public opinion. The new policy also introduces more efficient coordination mechanisms through a steering Committee under the responsibility of DG X (Audiovisual Media, Information, Communication and Culture) that will maintain a constant watch over all information and communication activities. A series of proposals on specific matters will be put to the Commission in the near future so that the appropriate action can be taken this year. Specifically, the Commission intends to reorganize DG X before the end of July to bring it into line with its new policy.
