European Parliament session of 12-16 July 1993: Distance learning; satellite/cable retransmission; new Structural Funds
The following RTD-related topics are among subjects tabled for discussion during the European Parliament sitting of 12-16 July 1993: - A report from the Education Committee taking the view that distance learning can play a valuable role in complementing EC action programmes such as LINGUA, COMETT and ERASMUS especially to back up linguistic studies. The Commission is called upon to submit a proposal for action to support the European dimension of distance learning, taking into account the quality of learning materials used, copyright, and examining the possibility of equating qualifications. - The second reading of the proposal for a Council Directive on copyright rules for cross border broadcasting by satellite and cable retransmission (COM(91) 276 of 11.9.1991). - A first reading of the proposals for the new Structural Funds. Tabled amendments include: A call for at least 10% of total regional spending to go towards Community initiatives such as the INTERREG cross-border programme; Structural Fund support for coastal protection in peripheral Member States; support for training and health systems; funding to encourage sustainable rural development including environmentally friendly production methods; support for more intensive research with a view to improving the conservation and management of fisheries stocks.
