Urban governance is a crucial policy issue of the 21stcentury. An interdisciplinary EU-funded research project, GOV_SSI, addressed this issue by examining France and the United Kingdom. The two countries serve as prime examples of differences in terms of their institutional, economic, social and cultural traditions of government and governance. GOV_SSI performed a critical analysis of mechanisms for urban regeneration governance. This involved both private and public sectors of society. From there it analysed their impact and the way they can contribute to a more sustainable city in broader terms. Different participation around the notion of spaces was included in the work. Policy and research recommendations were also provided to reach a wider audience via publications, presentations and seminars. Results showed the differences in community engagement between the two countries. The work contributes to scientific understanding of regeneration governance from a cross-national perspective. New insights have been gained regarding different approaches to governance as well as potential policy implications for cities.
