European Parliament discusses transport of nuclear waste
In its sitting of 12-16 July 1993, the European Parliament adopted (39 in favour, 19 against, 2 abstentions) a Resolution to recommend that the objective of Community policy should be to end the movement of nuclear waste between Member States. The Resolution also recommends tougher safety controls for the transport of plutonium including a ban on the carrying of dangerous nuclear materials on ferries. Sea transport of plutonium should be restricted to purpose-built vessels.
