The Committee of the Regions has adopted an opinion stating that local and regional authorities must ensure that the transformations to the labour market caused by the emergence of the information society are positive. The opinion, drawn up by German member Tilman Tögel emphasised that the cities and regions must adapt education provisions to the new working environment. 'As regional and local authorities are both responsible for education and a driving force behind economic development, they can help build bridges between educational and vocational training institutions on the one hand and industry on the other,' explained Mr Tögel. The opinion also draws attention to the radical changes that the information society will bring to public services. Public access websites offering training to all in information society skills should be a priority, states the opinion.
