GEANT - the European research backbone - moves step nearer
Three milestone contracts were signed on 5 July in Cambridge, UK, for the provision of multi-Gigabit connectivity, a central part of the proposed GEANT, the pan-European research network co-funded by the European Commission. GEANT plans to be operational by November this year and will provide links between the research and education communities, covering over 3000 organisations, in 31 countries at speeds of up to 10 Gigabits a second Three major contractors involved will provide 118 Gigabits of its total of 120 Gigabits used by GEANT. The contracts were signed by DANTE, the coordinating partner of the project, with COLT telecom, Telia international carrier and T-systems.
