A call for proposals issued by Directorate-General XI (Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection) of the Commission of the European Communities concerns the granting of financial support for pilot schemes designed to prepare, promote or facilitate participation by companies in an environmental management and audit scheme. In the European Community programme of Policy and Action in Relation to the Environment and Sustainable Development (described in COM(92) 23, "towards sustainability" Volume II, of 30.3.1992) the Commission envisages granting financial support for such schemes. Council Regulation EEC/1839/93 of 29.6.1993 (published in OJ No L 168 of 10.7.1993) allows voluntary participation by companies in the industrial sector in a Community ecomanagement and audit scheme. The proposed measures which are the subject of the call should have one of the following aims. These measures will primarily target small and medium-sized enterprises: - To prepare the implementation of the environmental management and audit scheme by means of pilot demonstration projects; - To inform companies and the competent national or local authorities about the scheme; - To train industrial company staff responsible for environmental protection and professionals specializing in auditing and validation activities provided for in the above mentioned regulation. The selected projects must be completed within 18 months of the date of signature of the respective contracts. The Commission's financial support will not exceed 60% of the actual costs incurred in carrying them out. Proposals, containing information defined in the call, should be submitted to: Commission of the European Communities Directorate-General for Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection, DG XI, Unit 3, Finance and Contracts Attn. Mr. J.J. Groenendaal (BU-5 03/170) 200 rue de la Loi B-1049 Brussels Documents may be requested (free of charge), within thirty days of the date of publication of the call in the Official Journal, from: Commission of the European Communities Directorate-General for Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection, DG XI, Unit A-2 Attn.
