A Decision concerning a Community Technology Initiative for Disabled and Elderly People (TIDE, 1993-1994), was adopted by the Council at its Session of 21.9.1993. The TIDE initiative (proposed by the Commission in COM(93) 175 of 13.5.1993) aims to stimulate the creation of an internal market in rehabilitation technology in Europe to facilitate the socioeconomic integration of disabled or elderly people. It takes into account the results of the TIDE pilot action (OJ No C 76 of 21.3.1991). To achieve its objectives, TIDE will seek to promote technology applications in the area of rehabilitation and to stimulate cooperation between industries in this field. In scope, the initiative is to cover four Areas: - Access to communications and information technology and support for interpersonal communications; - Environmental control technologies for daily living; - Restoration and enhancement of motor and cognitive functions; - Integrated systems technologies. The Community's financial contribution shall be adapted to the characteristics of specific projects or actions. It may take the form of a direct or indirect subsidy, an advance on capital, or may take other suitable forms. The total Community financial contribution estimated necessary for implementation of TIDE during 1993-1994 is ECU 30 million.
