The International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (INTAS) is an association created under Belgian private law. Members of the Association comprise the European Community, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom. In an initial phase, the Association will concentrate on the promotion of research projects jointly performed between research teams from NIS and member states of the Association as well as pan-European scientific networks. Hence, INTAS invites interested scientists and research teams to submit declarations of intent related to joint scientific research or networking projects All exact and natural sciences, economic sciences, as well as human and social sciences will be considered. Participation is open to any physical or legal person established in the member states of the Association and in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyztan, Moldovia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. A budget of approximately ECU 21,000,000 will be considered for 1993 to support the above activities. Approximately 100 to 200 projects and networks may thus be sponsored. Declarations of interest should include at least one partner from the NIS and two partners from two different member states of the Association. Proposers are encouraged to submit declarations of interest exhibiting a more extended cooperation, notably those which include several countries of the NIS together with several partners of Association member states. Financial support should primarily be devoted to scientists and research teams of the NIS. Declarations of intent will be evaluated and a pre-selection will be established by the Council of Scientists for the Association. Pre-selected applicants will then be invited to submit a full proposal for detailed assessment. The final selection of proposals for funding will be undertaken by the Association based on the results of the assessments and on the available funding. It should be noted that a further call for declarations of intent is scheduled to be issued early in 1994. Declarations of intent must be received, under envelope only, by the Secretariat of the Association by 15 October 1993 (17:00 hours): Secretariat of the International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (INTAS) 8 Square de Meeus B-1040 Brussels Further information, including application forms, may be obtained from the above address: Attn.
