Commission grants support for LIFE projects
The Commission agreed on 22 October 1993 to co-finance a third series of demonstration and technical assistance projects in the context of the Community financial instrument for the protection of the environment (LIFE). A total of 99 projects having a combined cost of ECU 207.7 million will receive overall Community financial support of ECU 44.6 million. These projects concern demonstration and technical assistance in the territories of the twelve Member States. Community financial support of ECU 20.6 million is also granted to 22 projects with a total cost of ECU 36.3 million for the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora in Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United Kingdom. The LIFE Regulation was adopted by the Council on 21.5.1992 to support projects of this kind, together with support for awareness, stimulation and assistance actions in environmental protection. The 1993 budget for the financial instrument is ECU 68.3 million, of which ECU 3 million are set aside for the European Environmental agency.
