Agriculture ministers to discuss innovation
Innovation will be the topic of conversation at an informal meeting between the EU's and candidate country Agriculture Ministers and EU Commissioners Franz Fischler (agriculture and fisheries) and David Byrne (health and consumer protection) on the Danish island of Funen on 8 to 10 September. Danish Minister for food, agriculture and fisheries Mariann Fischer Boel sees the meeting as a unique opportunity to initiate discussion on innovation in Europe's agriculture sector. 'In my opinion, we need innovation of the agricultural sector and agricultural policy. We want the trade to be competitive in an increasingly global market, and we want it to be able to meet consumers' demand for safe food of high quality,' said the minister. 'At the same time, we must ensure sustainable production, and innovation should develop in cooperation with research and consumer protection policy. An agricultural policy that perpetuates the status quo has no future,' says Ms Fischer Boel.
