Authorization for State aid (cases where the Commission raises no objections) is granted with regard to a German support programme to finance basic industrial and applied research in the field of laser technology. The programme, "Ausgewaehlte Bereiche der Laserforschung und Lasertechnic im Rahmen des Foerderungskonzepts Laser 2000" (State Aid No N620/93), has an overall budget of ECU 84 million covering the period to 1997. It offers a maximum aid intensity of up to 50% for basic industrial research and 25% for applied research. The maximum rate may be increased in cases where research is carried out by SMEs (an additional 10%), in the former GDR (an additional 10%), and by SMEs in the former GDR (an additional 15%).
