Portuguese coastal assessment: Cohesion Fund
Assistance is granted from the cohesion financial instrument to a study to assess the sensitivity of coastal regions in Portugal (Commission Decision 93/646/EEC of 29 July 1993). The objective of the study is to create a set of instruments for managing natural resources and the coast and to provide a technical contribution towards recommendations relating to the degree of treatment for, and the location of, waste-water outlets. The project will help to define sensitive areas along the coast by assessing the absorption capacity of the sea, providing backing for the water supply policy, in particular basic sanitation, and taking full account of the environmental aspects of other policies. It is coordinated with the environmental policy and the Portuguese coastal development plan, and provides back-up for the Centro Tematico Ambiente Costeiro (of the European Agency for the Environment). The maximum contribution from the cohesion financial instrument (at a rate of assistance of 100%) is fixed at ECU 674,000.
