Commission Decision 94/3/EC of 20 December 1993 has established a standard list of waste materials to fulfil the requirements of the Council Directive on waste, 75/442/EEC of 15 July 1975. This list, known as the European Waste Catalogue (EWC), is a harmonized, non-exhaustive list of wastes, which will be periodically reviewed. It is to serve as a reference nomenclature providing a common terminology throughout the European Union with the purpose of improving the efficiency of waste management activities. In this respect the European Waste Catalogue should constitute the basic reference for the EU programme on waste statistics launched pursuant to the Council Resolution on waste management policy of 7.5.1990 (OJ No C 122 of 18.5.1990). The complete Catalogue, which will be adapted in the light of scientific and technical progress, is annexed to the Commission's Decision.
